SPINE WIDTH CALCULATOR
Spine width, to the thousandth.
Page count × paper thickness. Nothing more — but the paper thickness is where most covers go wrong.

Rounded to three decimals, matching how KDP's own previewer reports spine width.
The rule everyone forgets
Spine text is not a style choice, it is a physics limit. At 0.16 in and below there is no room for a cap height that survives offset printing. That is why KDP's guidance lands around 100 pages, and why a 90-page novella looks better with a blank spine than with a squeezed title.
Why your spine moved between drafts
Two pages added at the end of the manuscript = +0.0045 in of spine on white paper. That shifts the front cover origin by the same amount, so text that was perfectly centred is now 0.0045 in off — invisible to you, visible to a print operator comparing against the spec sheet. The fix is not a new design: it is a wrap built on a parametric canvas that recalculates all three panels when the page count changes.
Let the spine follow the page count.
Change pages in CoverNice and back, spine and front re-flow together — text stays anchored, the export stays valid.
Questions people actually ask
What is the minimum page count for spine text on KDP?
KDP will print a spine from 79 pages, but legible vertical text needs roughly 100 pages and at least 0.16 in of spine. Below that, leave it blank — printed microtype on a 0.09 in spine reads as noise.
How wide is a 300-page spine?
0.676 in on black & white white paper, 0.750 in on cream, 0.704 in on premium color. The difference comes only from paper thickness.
Does hardcover use the same formula?
No. Hardcover wraps around boards, so the spine includes board thickness plus a hinge allowance and the wrap extends further for turn-in. KDP hardcover has its own template; do not reuse a paperback wrap.
